Second amendment rights are facing the possibility of a huge setback in the 2016 election. After congress has repeatedly fought and won against the anti-gun lobbyists, groups such as Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety are focusing their efforts on individual state ballot initiatives. They plan to use the money of the billionaires in New York to sway voters in other states. Using their influence, the anti-gun groups have managed to get on the ballot in California, Maine, Nevada, and Washington.
Gun legislation is not a one-size-fits-all concept. What’s best for New York, according to their legislature, is certainly not what’s best for a western state like Nevada or a mostly rural state like Maine. Laws that impede the rights of responsible gun-owners are only passed to build the resumes of career politicians and cause needless problems and difficulties for the citizens that have to abide by them. From large magazine bans to expanded background checks, if the proposed legislation this year passes it would be a huge loss for second amendment rights. If you live in one of these states, here’s a quick rundown of what you will be voting on:
Maine – “Gun Owners of Maine” has called the proposed legislation to impose background checks even on private transfers “the most sweeping infringement on gun rights in Maine history.” The measure would require a background check anytime a firearm changes hands, even in a private sale. The only exception is if the firearm is exchanged between family members. Not only does this hinder gun owners, it will tie up licensed firearms dealers who must conduct background checks for all of the private transfers on top of the checks from their own sales.
Nevada – The legislation proposed in Nevada is the same as that in Maine. The difference here is that the NRA is dedicating a large amount of funds to fight against Nevadans for Background Checks. The laws proposed in Nevada and Maine would do nothing to improve the safety of the state and only hinder law-abiding citizens.
California – It’s no surprise that California is on this list. This state some of the most draconian gun control measures in the nation. They’ve set a new low this year by proposing that ammunitions sales have to undergo the same background check process as sales of firearms, as well as a ban on magazines that can carry over ten rounds. This ludicrous proposal is all apart of Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom’s strategy to boost his own image leading up to his 2018 gubernatorial run.
Washington – Infringing not only on the rights of gun owner’s but on a citizen’s right to due process, the “Individual Gun Access Prevention by Court Order” measure would allow a judge to remove a citizen’s firearm if he or she is considered a danger to themselves or their community. Of course this is completely up to the judge’s discretion and not based on an actual trial or presentation of evidence, leaving open the possibility that a citizen may have their firearm taken away unjustly Laws such as this are not only impractical, they are outright unethical.
